Strategic Collaboration - The Path to Greater
Value

If you were to place five people in a rowboat
and each rowed in a different direction, where would the boat go? In
circles. So, why are we surprised that the adversarial approach to construction
has our projects spinning out of control? Simply put, if people believe
they can only improve their situation at the expense of others, conflict
is inevitable.
What is great customer service? Maybe
a more critical question to contractors should ask is, “Can contractors
afford to deliver great customer service in the highly competitive construction
marketplace?” Not only is the answer to the second question, “Absolutely!”
but great customer service is mandatory if the contractor wants to maximize
its financial return.
In May of 2000, I
participated in an AEC conference in San Francisco,
during which I had the opportunity to visit with
a variety of industry practitioners and dot.com
executives. One could unmistakably sense the fear
throughout the speakers and attendees alike.
In late 1998, I attended
a meeting of national real estate executives during
which a workshop was held to discuss the future
affects of technology on the industry. Each member
of the panel of speakers, representing various
disciplines, devoted their comments to describing
a variety of new technologies which would soon
be incorporated in the next generation of buildings.
When everything is a priority, deadlines are
looming, and there just isn't enough of you or your team to go around,
how do you cope with the stress, stay focused on results, and make things
happen?
